The Difference of Pink Himalayan Salt and Regular Salt

Himalayan pink salt (also known as pink salt or pink crystal salt) is a salt rich in magnesium, calcium, sodium, iron, potassium and chloride. Himalayan pink salt is highly refined salt extracted from the foothills of the Himalayan Mountains. The salt is extracted from the waters around the lake Pichola along with other salts from wells and springs. The pink color of this salt is obtained by reacting water with oxygen in an open-air furnace that is heated to nearly 1500 degrees Fahrenheit.

Himalayan salt contains numerous trace minerals like sulfur, potassium, calcium, bromide and zinc which are required for human body. It also contains a large amount of magnesium, calcium, sodium, iron, phosphorus and potassium. These minerals have important effects on the human body and help in various body functions such as maintaining nerve cell function, regulation of blood pressure and blood volume, and absorption of nutrients in the digestive tract, muscle tissue and organs. The salt can also act as an anti-inflammatory and an antibacterial agent due to its ability to neutralize harmful bacteria and viruses.

There are no prescribed recommendations for the proper amount of intake of Himalayan pink salt or any other mineral. In fact, the recommended intake of these minerals in recommended quantities may even prove to be harmful to the body because the presence of too much of any of these minerals may result in corrosion or damage to vital body components. Generally, people who consume these in prescribed quantities may suffer from hyponatremia, seizures, kidney or liver damage, weakness, excessive fatigue, blurred vision, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, abdominal pains, cramps, head colds, joint pain and other rheumatic problems.

It is advisable to follow food recommendations provided by your doctor and avoid eating foods rich in cholesterol, fat, sugar, cholesterol and sodium. Even though the salt is commonly associated with hypertension, it may also cause high blood pressure, diabetes, eczema, asthma, excessive fatigue, backache, skin rashes, urinary disorders, irritability, flue, and heartburn. Excessive intake of this salt may also cause fatigue, loss of appetite, diarrhea, bad breath, insomnia, stomach cramps, weakness, blurred vision, excessive thirst, flushing, and chest pains. To be on the safe side, it is always best to consult a doctor if you notice any of the above symptoms. Although Himalayan pink salt is known to lower blood pressure and decrease the risks of heart disease, its side effects should not be ignored. Hence, it is highly recommended to take the recommended dosage not more than the suggested dose.

The salt is often prescribed by doctors to reduce high blood pressure, but it can also be taken as an alternative treatment to lessen the negative effects of regular salt. However, regular salt should not be avoided entirely since it is still considered to be a required daily intake to ensure good health. More importantly, pink Himalayan salt is a healthier alternative compared to table salt. It contains much less calories and does not contribute to dehydration. Since regular salt usually contains preservatives, the recommended dose of pink Himalayan salt will help maintain the body’s mineral balance.

Although pink Himalayan salt is known to be a healthier substitute compared to regular salt, do not expect instant positive results. This type of salt takes time before it completely eliminates the unwanted substances found in regular salt. However, with constant use, you will notice a significant change and you will soon have the healthy and nutritious food that you need.
